Adrian Belic, Beyond the Call, documentary, has the feel of a real-life Indiana Jones, as three eccentric, middle-aged men travel the world delivering life-saving aid directly into the hands of civilians on the frontline of war. These modern-day knights, filled with lovable quirks, take danger in stride while visiting some of the most beautiful, but troubled, places on earth. These are the most can-do, likable, brave characters you’ll ever meet in a documentary. (2007)

Cut Loose Productions, To Touch the Soul, documentary, involves the experiences of 27 university students as they travel to Cambodia to create art projects with impoverished children. Director Ryan Goble brilliantly captures the emotional context as the students bond with the children and discover the true meaning of kindness, selflessness, and courage. It shows that even the smallest attempt at making a difference can have life-changing consequences for the people involved. (2007)

Glenn Osten Anderson, The Long Road, internet site streaming, is an excellent example of how observational documentaries and the internet can be merged in support of a worthy cause. Four short episodes profile two disabled athletes as they rise above the physical and emotional challenges of their disabilities to take part in a marathon. URL = www.armorytrack.com/thelongroad. Golightly Films, Inc., Listen to the Sounds of Life, nonprofit/fundraising, weaves a sad but loving story of children with cancer and their courageous struggle with live and death. Producer Kaja Zaloudek is a master at doing the impossible, i.e., making “talking heads” compelling when she captures on-camera appearances by family members. Dramatic impact is increased via a prudent mix of color and black and white footage. This production is a fine example of the power of fundraising videos to brand nonprofits. (2007)

Shedd Productions, Green Is The Color Of Money, contemporary issues, is a documentary by Academy Award winning filmmaker Ben Shedd about designing and building the Banner Bank Building, one of the world’s most energy efficient, high performance structures. Produced in high definition, the production illustrates the power of a documentary to foster technological change. (2007) Website

Still-Motion.ca (Canada), Hunter Highlights, wedding videography, shot by one videographer using three cameras in rainy conditions, is all about storytelling under adverse conditions. Movie-like, the production captures the character and flavor of the love story. Videographer Patrick Moreau combines voice, music, camera angles and careful editing to create texture and mood. (2007)

Gandy Dancer Productions, Where Does It Hurt?, special purpose production, was produced to brand and sell services for Injuryed Workers Pharmacy. Smart script, quick cuts, and carefully planned camera shots effectively communicate the benefits of using the vendor’s services. (2006)

Hank Isaac, The Gift, nonprofit/fundraising, unlike almost every other short videos to support fundraising efforts, this production avoided using “talking-heads”, opting instead to subtly communicate the value of the nonprofit by following a little girl as she navigates through the landscape of the nonprofit’s services. (2006)

Merestone, Wells Fargo Financial - Leadership Conference 2006, corporate/stakeholder communication, is a clever and unusual set of annimations used to brand, unify and create excitement during the conference opening and introduction of speakers at a banker’s convention. (2006)
2005 Best of Show
Jazz & Syd Productions, Motherless Child, dramatic impact, a granddaughter explores how the 1960 suicide her grandmother forever changed the lives of her thirteen aunts and uncles. This amateur’s documetary records emotional accounts of how her grandfather forced his children into modern day slavery and child prostitution. While the production is technically flawed, this is storytelling at its best. (2005)
The Endowment for Human Development, The Biology of Prenatal Development, a meticulously researched health/science documentary that details the progression of fetal development. Superb graphics and sub-titles in several languages. (2005)
You're The Star Productions, Kim & Enrique: Our Wedding, weddings, is a creative and beautifully filmed wedding production. Wedding videography presents technical challenges regarding lighting and sound and creative challenges regarding storytelling and capturing personalities in a warm and concise manner. Producer Harlene Conlin demonstrates mastery of the craft. (2005)
