Bogart Reininger Films, Artois the Goat, feature film, is a nicely shot, skillfully directed art comedy. Directors Cliff and Kyle Bogart do a masterful job of developing the plot and creating interesting characters. It’s an off-beat reflection on love and creating meaning in our “flyspeck lives” that will certainly entertain and delight audiences.

Cyprus Productions, The Hollow Tree, short film, is a well-crafted, visually attractive fantasy in which a young boy falls into another world with strange and eccentric characters, wolves, a hag, and a magical tree. Along the way the boy learns that home is not a place, but rather, being with those we love. This is a film that can be enjoyed by young and old alike.
Helicon Arts Cooperative, Yesterday Was A Lie, feature film, is fresh and stylish, and successfully merges an interesting plot into a film noir and science fiction crowd-pleaser. This classic detective mystery has a notable Bacall-like performance by Kipleigh Brown. Writer/director James Kerwin teases the boundaries of reality and delivers a film that will entertain both young and old. www.heliconarts.com
Mark McKenzie, Saving Sarah Cain, original score, showcases the talent of this brilliant composer using a 40-piece live orchestra for portions of the soundtrack and the synthesizer with solo instruments for the more intimate scenes. The rich music lifts the film adds to dramatic impact. www.markmckenzie.org
Michelle Mama (Canada), 21 Days to Nawroz, feature documentary, is a study of experimental democracy in post-Saddam Kurdistan. Master filmmaker, Michelle Mama, captures the portraits of three very different Kurdish women: a feminist attorney, a tech-savvy young woman, and the survivor of a chemical bombing. It is a story of courage and hope as these Middle Eastern women look to the future.
Mike Hollboom (Canada), Mark, feature documentary, is a compelling biography of the director’s friend and long-time film editor, Mark Karbusicky who died at age 35. Karbusicky was an animal rights activist, political vegan, punk maestro, the life-partner of Mirha-Soleil Ross, a transsexual force of nature. This beautifully created documentary grabs viewers at a visceral level. www.mikehoolboom.com
OCN Films, Blue-Eyed Mary, short film, is a story about free-spirited Johanna, a beautiful sixteen-year-old with the mind of a child, spends her time climbing trees, catching frogs, and half-heartedly helping her grandmother with the household chores. But when the handsome neighbor comes by to mow the lawn, everything changes in ways both predictable and utterly unexpected. www.OCNFILMS.blogspot.com
Paranoid Pictures (Canada), Growing Op, feature film, is a coming of age film about a teen boy living in a family that operates a “grow house”, and home-schools him to cover their criminal activities. When he emerges to a public school he creates a wholesome identify to lure the first love of his life. Great storyline, excellent performances by a stand-out cast, and a stunning sound track by noted Canadian artists.
Science North (Canada), Mysteries of the Great Lakes, feature documentary, is a rallying cry for protection of the Earth’s largest freshwater ecosystem, the Great Lakes. As you might expect, this IMAX® film is a visual masterpiece that captures the beauty and importance of the Great lakes. website
Triskelion Entertainment, Liminal, short film, has a universal theme of one person’s wrongful use of power over another in relationship, but pushes the limits of conventional film in its style and raw drama. Shot in black and white, 35mm, non-erotic, but with both players naked to enhance the characters primitive vulnerability. Unique and startling. www.triskelionent.com/
